Govt to boost maritime sector in Karnataka

Mangalore: To give a boost to maritime sector in Karnataka, the State Government has announced several measures in its Budget proposals for 2009-10. They include the establishment of a maritime board, development of minor ports, and dredging at Karwar port.

The budget proposals say that necessary legal framework is being worked out for setting up of Karnataka Maritime Board for the development of ports in the State.

An amount of Rs 100 crore is provided for the construction of ports in western coasts of Karwar, Tadadi, Honnavar, Malpe and Old Mangalore with private partnership through the aforesaid board during 2010, it said.

Private participation
Mr Srinivasa S. Kamath, President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), told that the private participation in maritime sector will help boost economy of the region and create jobs in the coming years.
