Gujarat Reveals Blueprint for Establishment of Three New Airports to Enhance Connectivity

In a strategic move to bolster tourism and upgrade infrastructure, Gujarat has revealed plans to establish three new airports, with one slated to be near the iconic Statue of Unity in Kevadia.

This announcement was made during the Assembly session in response to queries raised by MLA Shailesh Mehta, indicating a broader expansion strategy beyond Kevadia. The proposed airports are also earmarked for Ferkuwa and Surova in Tilakwada, alongside Siddhapur and Vadnagar.

Preliminary feasibility studies are already underway at these locations, signaling a significant boost in connectivity and tourism prospects for the region.

"The decision to establish these airports stems from the tremendous success of the Statue of Unity. Siddhapur and Vadnagar have also seen a notable uptick in tourist arrivals, and improved air connectivity is expected to further stimulate tourism across all three destinations," remarked an official.

With approximately 50 lakh visitors to the Statue of Unity in 2023, the surge in tourism underscores the need for expanded facilities and new attractions. The government has been proactive in enhancing passenger amenities, including transportation infrastructure, exemplified by the recent introduction of 30 electric buses, aligning with the vision of a sustainable "dream area".

The burgeoning tourism has also led to the registration of over 4 lakh visitors since December 2023, a testament to the diverse range of attractions, improved transport facilities, and unique experiences such as traditional tribal homestays.

Responding to inquiries regarding the Prime Minister's 2018 announcement on the development of multiple airports, officials confirmed the construction of an airport just 12 km from Kevadia. This strategic move follows the resounding success of the Statue of Unity, which has welcomed over 1 crore tourists since its inauguration.
