GVMC eyes transit-oriented development system for Visakhapatnam.
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has mooted setting up a transit-oriented development (TOD) system in the city on the lines of that under development in Ahmedabad.
Briefing mediapersons about the TOD recently, GVMC commissioner MV Satyanarayana said efforts are being made to introduce TOD in the city in order to get the desired results and encourage use of public transport among citizens, thus reducing vehicle pollution and fuel consumption.
In addition to that, the GVMC is currently focusing on the 75-km-long Vizag Metro Rail (VMR), 44-km-long bus rapid transit system (BRTS) and desalination project, he said.
'The last date for receiving bids for the preparation of detailed project report (DPR) of the VMR is July 23 and the civic body will get a clear picture about the project only once a suitable agency is finalised to prepare the DPR by August. Nearly Rs. 200 crore is required to develop one km stretch of the VMR,' he said.
