"Haldia Petrochemicals Aims to Pioneer Integrated Phenolics Chain"

Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd.U (HPL) has unveiled its ambitious plan to establish India's first on-purpose Propylene plant, employing Olefin Conversion Technology (OCT), and the country's largest Phenol plant in Haldia, West Bengal. This strategic move positions HPL as the first integrated player in the Phenolics chain within India, as outlined in the company's official statement.

HPL's exploration of this strategic venture reflects a dedicated pursuit of leadership in the specialized domain of high-demand speciality chemicals across the nation. The company underscores the significant role played by speciality chemicals, which contributed to a remarkable revenue of ₹999 crore in FY23.

Furthermore, HPL's Phenol plant boasts substantial capacity, with the capability to produce 300 KTPA Phenol and 185 KTPA Acetone. According to Navanit Narayan, Whole-Time Director and Chief Executive Officer of HPL, "With the commissioning of these plants, the overall chemical business portfolio is expected to increase by an additional ₹5,000 crore. The company has ambitious targets to complete the project by Q1 2026."

The rationale behind this significant investment is rooted in the escalating demand for petrochemicals, propelled by factors such as India's large population base, favorable demographics, burgeoning economic growth, urbanization, and the positive ripple effect on sectors like automobile production, construction, infrastructure, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

Moreover, this proposed investment is poised to be one of the most substantial in West Bengal's chemical sector over the past two decades. It also promises to drive the establishment of a growing number of ancillary units, thus contributing to the overall industrial development of the region.
