Herrenknecht to Expand Chennai Operations with New Tunnel Boring Machine Plant.

Germany-based Herrenknecht, a global leader in tunnel boring machine (TBM) manufacturing, is set to expand its footprint in India with a new production facility in North Chennai, according to sources.

The move comes as India witnesses a surge in tunneling projects across metro rail, road, and infrastructure sectors, significantly increasing demand for TBMs. Currently, a large number of TBMs in operation across India are imported from countries like China, the US, and Germany.

Herrenknecht, which became the first company to establish a TBM assembly facility in Chennai back in 2007, plans to set up the new plant on a 12.4-acre site in North Chennai. The facility will deepen its local manufacturing capabilities and potentially reduce reliance on imports.

The expansion underlines Herrenknecht’s long-term commitment to the Indian infrastructure market and positions Chennai as a key hub for tunnel boring technology in the region.
