HMEL Signs MoUs with Emerson, AVEVA to Enhance Automation in Refinery and Petrochemicals.
HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd (HMEL) signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with global automation leaders Emerson and AVEVA recently during India Energy Week 2025 in New Delhi. The partnerships aim to enhance digital adoption in refinery and petrochemical operations through cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), advanced analytics, and real-time optimization.
HMEL, a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and Mittal Energy Investment, operates the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery in Bathinda, Punjab, which includes an 11.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) crude oil refinery and a 1.2 MTPA multi-feed cracker, along with polyethylene and polypropylene plants.
Prabh Das, MD & CEO of HMEL, emphasized the company’s commitment to digital transformation, stating, “Process automation has been at the heart of HMEL’s strategic vision for building a smart enterprise. We are thrilled to partner with Emerson and AVEVA to develop innovative automation solutions that will boost digital transformation at HMEL.”
AVEVA Partnership for AI and Smart Refining
The MoU with AVEVA focuses on AI-driven solutions and digitalization for smart refining and petrochemical operations. The collaboration will also establish a Centre of Excellence for analytics-driven refinery transformation and long-term co-innovation initiatives.
Ajit Kulkarni, VP-India at AVEVA, said, “By combining AVEVA’s advanced digital solutions with HMEL’s operational expertise, we aim to drive measurable improvements in energy efficiency, sustainability, and resource optimization.”
Emerson Partnership for Energy Value Chain Optimization
The partnership with Emerson will co-develop innovative solutions for optimizing the oil-to-chemicals supply chain. By leveraging real-time industrial data platforms, HMEL aims to improve operational margins through enterprise-wide integration and visualization.
Anil Bhatia, VP & MD of Emerson India, stated, “Emerson’s Boundless Automation vision, integrating intelligent field, edge, and cloud technologies, will help HMEL unlock a new era of productivity and value creation.”
With these strategic collaborations, HMEL continues to strengthen its position as a technology-driven refinery and petrochemical leader, focusing on efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
