India Clears ₹1.86 Trillion Renewable Grid and Battery Storage Programme

New Delhi, September 30, 2026: India’s Cabinet has approved a ₹1.86 trillion ($19.4 billion) renewable-energy infrastructure programme, marking a major expansion of investment in transmission networks and battery storage as the country prepares for much higher levels of clean-power generation.

Of the total outlay, about ₹1.36 trillion will be used to strengthen intra-state transmission systems, enabling the evacuation of as much as 135 GW of renewable electricity. A further ₹500 billion has been allocated as incentives for the installation of 50 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS).

The programme addresses two of the most critical bottlenecks facing India’s energy transition: insufficient transmission capacity and limited ability to store renewable electricity for use when solar and wind generation declines.

The investment could create a substantial multi-year order pipeline for transmission EPC contractors, transformer manufacturers, cable and conductor companies, switchgear suppliers, substation developers and grid-automation providers. Battery manufacturers, power-conversion-system suppliers, energy-management software companies, cooling and fire-safety providers are also positioned to benefit from the 50 GWh storage programme.

The policy push comes as India targets 500 GW of non-fossil-fuel-based power capacity by 2030, compared with about 304 GW currently.

For industry, the significance extends beyond renewable generation itself. Large-scale investment in transmission and storage is expected to strengthen demand across electrical equipment, engineering services, digital grid management and domestic battery manufacturing, potentially creating one of India’s largest new clean-energy infrastructure supply chains.
