Indian cos can explore coal from Mozambique: Railways

New Delhi: With a rail link in Mozambique – constructed by a consortium of public sector units RITES-Ircon and the Mozambique Government likely to be operational by September 2009, the Railways has asked mining and coal consuming Indian public sector units such as NTPC, SAIL and MMTC to explore the possibility of importing coal from Mozambique.

In the joint venture, RITES has 26 per cent stake, Ircon has 25 per cent stake, while the rest is with the Mozambique Government.

The RITES-led consortium had won the concession to build and operate the rail link for 25 years (2004-2029), and subsequently transfer it. The Ministry had a meeting on the issue on Monday with various stakeholders, said sources.
