Jayalalithaa says TN ready to sell 1,000 MW surplus wind power.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa recently urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expedite setting up of inter-State Green Energy Corridor to enable Tamil Nadu to transmit 1000 MW of surplus renewable power to other States which are in need of such power.

The Chief Minister, in her letter to the Prime Minister in this regard, said since a dedicated infrastructure would take some time to be created, in the meantime, the Power Grid Corporation could be directed to allocate dedicated transmission capacity on a priority basis to evacuate the surplus wind energy available in Tamil Nadu to other states this season.

Pointing out that Tamil Nadu had already met its Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO), the Chief Minister said “many States which are unable to meet the RPO obligation are approaching Tamil Nadu, for assistance. To facilitate the sale of surplus wind power to the States in need of renewable energy, it is important that a dedicated inter-State Green Energy Corridor is established. Besides, the Power Grid Corporation has already proposes to establish such corridor.

Stating that Tamil Nadu’s efforts to establish an intra-State Green Energy Corridor had been progressing well, Jayalalithaa said “during the current season, wind power to an extent of 4,400 MW is being utilized in the Tamil Nadu Grid. But the intra-State evacuation infrastructure would not help full consumption of the entire wind energy generated in the State particularly in this season”, she added.

Jayalalithaa observed that Tamil Nadu was a pioneer in promoting renewable energy in the country and as on date, the State has an installed capacity of 7,600 MW of wind power contributes about 27 per cent of the country’s total installed wind capacity. “In addition, there is an installed capacity of 1,142 MW of solar power. Our goal is to add a further 4,500 mw of wind power and 5,000 MW of solar power over the next five years”, she added.
