J&K's Hydropower Capacity Set to Rise Sharply as Chenab Projects Near Completion.

Jammu and Kashmir is set to add 1,624 megawatts (MW) of hydropower capacity this year, with two major projects on the Chenab river system expected to be commissioned by December, providing a significant boost to the region's electricity generation.

The capacity addition comes as India steps up efforts to harness the waters of the western rivers for hydropower following the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, bringing renewed attention to projects on the Chenab basin.

The two projects—the 1,000-MW Pakal Dul hydroelectric project and the 624-MW Kiru hydroelectric project—are being developed by Chenab Valley Power Projects Ltd. in Kishtwar district. Once operational, they are expected to strengthen power supply in the region while contributing to India's broader renewable energy capacity.
