Kandla Port to Pioneer Magnetic Rail System for Freight.

In a significant leap towards futuristic freight logistics, DP World, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), and Nevomo have inked a landmark agreement to establish a first-of-its-kind magnetic rail system for cargo movement within Kandla port.

The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) sets the stage to explore the feasibility of this innovative transportation method. The collaboration will focus on developing and implementing a pilot project that utilizes Nevomo’s proprietary MagRail technology. This system is designed for the self-propelled movement of rail-based cargo and freight directly within the existing port infrastructure.

The initiative aims to demonstrate how MagRail technology can revolutionize short-haul cargo transfers by automating the process, significantly reducing the port's reliance on diesel vehicles, and ultimately boosting overall yard efficiency.

As part of the agreement, a 750-meter pilot project of the MagRail technology will be set up at Kandla. This will allow for the demonstration of self-propelled freight movement in a live port environment. The core objective is to develop and implement MagRail-based solutions that enable autonomous, electric-powered wagons to operate using linear motor technology on existing rail tracks.

This cutting-edge approach is expected to deliver multiple benefits, including enhanced capacity, improved efficiency, and increased speed for both containerized and bulk cargo. Furthermore, it promises to drastically reduce operational costs and CO2 emissions, making the port's logistics systems greener, faster, and more interoperable. This pilot project at Kandla could pave the way for a transformative shift in port logistics across India and beyond.
