Kishan-Ganga project to be discussed next month

The Indus Basin Water Commissions of Pakistan and India would discuss again the Kishan-Ganga dam project in India next month. The fourth round of the meeting between Pakistan Indus Basin Water Commission (PIWC) and India Indus Basin Water Commission (IIWC) culminated here on Tuesday.

After the meeting, PIWC Chairman Syed Jamaat Ali Shah told journalists that they had expressed openly all their reservations over Kishan-Ganga dam to the Indian delegation and it had been agreed that both sides would discuss again the matter in India next month.

Jamaat Ali said: 'No progress is possible in the discussion on Kishan-Ganga dam, until and unless the basic points are settled in this regard.' He hoped in the next sitting, the commissions would sort out the issue in a manner, which is acceptable to both sides.

The PIWC chairman said both sides had however been agreed on inspection of the dam over Jhelum River and its schedule would soon be chalked out. India took the stance to Pakistan's objections that it had not constructed any new dam on Jhelum River but rehabilitated some portion of the old one, which was wiped out in the recent flood, he added.

Jamaat Ali said they had also raised objections on the Uri-II project in Baramula district of held Kashmir, adding that they had clarified to the IIWC that India should not use the project to stop Pakistani water or to get control over it. The IIWC, he said, also provided more data and information on Uri-II and Pakistan review its stance in this regard after examining the fresh documents.
