"Kochi Water Metro Marks One Year of Operations on April 25"
The Kochi Water Metro, which completed one year of operations on April 25, has transported over 19 lakh passengers across five routes during this time, establishing itself as a successful and sustainable water transport system, according to its Managing Director Loknath Behera.
Behera noted that the water metro commenced operations on April 25 last year with nine boats on two routes, and it has since expanded to 14 vessels servicing five routes. "It has turned into a successful and sustainable public transportation system as well as a tourist attraction," he remarked.
The Kochi Water Metro Limited (KWML) issued a statement highlighting the transformative impact of the water metro on the water transport sector in the state. In its first year, the Kochi Water Metro serviced nearly two million passengers, indicating a strong demand for this form of transportation. The statement emphasized that the Kochi Water Metro has become a model for sustainable water transport, with similar projects being considered in various parts of the country.
The Kochi Water Metro has attracted a significant number of tourists, particularly since it reached Fort Kochi, a popular tourist destination. However, KWML aims to focus on encouraging island residents to use the water metro for their daily commutes. While the ticket prices range from Rs 20 to Rs 40, regular passengers can travel on the water metro for as little as Rs 10 with the use of travel passes.
Despite its success, the KWML faces challenges in expanding its operations due to a limited number of boats. The company is constructing five additional water metro terminals, with new services expected to start from September-October. To address capacity issues, Cochin Shipyard has committed to delivering five more boats by September.
KWML is also taking steps to enhance first and last mile connectivity to and from water metro terminals, further boosting the accessibility and convenience of the service. With its focus on sustainability and community engagement, the Kochi Water Metro looks set to continue playing a vital role in the region's public transport network.
