Kolkata Metro Tenders ₹378 Crore Contract for Purple Line Extension to IIM-C.

Kolkata Metro Tenders ₹378 Crore Contract for Purple Line Extension to IIM-C.

Bids have been invited for a ₹377.8 crore contract to extend Kolkata's Purple Line, with construction expected to begin in November. The project will add a 1.7 km viaduct and a new station, connecting the line from Joka to IIM-Calcutta.

The chosen contractor will have 30 months to complete the work, which includes building 44 pillars and the new station. Railway officials noted that the station will be designed with provisions for a future connection to the proposed Joka-Diamond Park project.

This extension is a key part of the larger Purple Line (Joka to Esplanade), which will eventually span 18 km with 14 stations, paralleling the existing North-South corridor. Once the entire line is operational, travelers from the airport will be able to reach IIM-Calcutta by using a series of metro interchanges, significantly improving connectivity for students, faculty, and local residents.

According to an official, the project will not only benefit the IIM-C campus but also numerous people in the surrounding area. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) is also advancing with the line's northern extension to Joka, which includes an underground station planned near the Governor House lawns.
