L&T bags contract for BMC’s ambitious Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road project.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finalised Larsen and Toubro (L&T) as the agency that will take up the construction works of the ambitious Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road (DBLR), which will be the final phase of the civic body’s coastal road project. The project will connect Dahisar in the northern suburbs with the satellite town of Bhayander through a series of arterial roads and tunnels.

The tender for the project was floated back in October, 2022 and a total nine companies had submitted their bids to the civic body, out of which three firms, J Kumar Infraprojects Limited, Larsen and Toubro and Afcons Infrastructure Limited were shortlisted, with the final work order being awarded to L&T on Tuesday.

Civic officials said L&T will be responsible not only for the construction but also get environment clearances. Civic officials said the construction works are set to begin immediately after the monsoon season.

Notably, L&T is the executing agency for the first phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP), that is expected to be opened by the end of this year, connecting Marine Drive with Bandra Worli Sea Link.

Pegged at a cost of Rs 3,186 crore, the proposed Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road will be 5.6 kilometer long, of which 1.5 km will be under the jurisdiction of BMC, while 4.1 km will be under the jurisdiction of Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC). The Mumbai civic body is the planning and executing agency of the project, and the primary objective of creating this arterial road is to declutter the daily traffic movement at Dahisar Check Naka from where vehicles pass towards Vasai, Virar, Palghar, Gujarat and northwards to Delhi via Western Express Highway which further extends as National Highway-48.

The elevated bridge will be 45 meters wide and will be built on stilts. It will have 4×4 lanes to allow smooth traffic flow. Civic officials said emergency lanes for passage of vehicles like ambulances and fire-brigade engines will also be constructed on both sides. BMC is also exploring options to create a multi-level car parking and a transport bay beneath the arterial road.
