Madurai Corporation Unveils Rs. 280-Cr Water Project.
Madurai Corporation 2015-16 budget recently proposed to set up a third Vaigai River water supply project at a total cost of Rs. 280 crore, which is expected to benefit about 3.25 lakh people in 28 wards annexed by the civic body.
City Mayor VV Rajan Chellappa told the Corporation Council that the scheme would increase drinking water supply by 8.97 million litres, mainly to areas such as Anaiyur and Vandiyur.
Madurai has been facing acute water shortage in the past three years.
The budget also proposed a combined Cauvery water supply scheme at an estimated cost of Rs. 106 crore for the newer wards.
The Rs. 280-crore ambitious project, which is expected to increase water supply by about 800mcft (million cubic feet), will be funded by Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (TUFIDCO) through debt of Rs. 15 crore, Rs. 15 crore by the Corporation and the rest by the State government.
The 72 wards of the expanded 100-ward Corporation receive 900 mcft water from the first Vaigai project and 600 mcft from the second project.
