Major road proposals on the anvil to ease traffic.
The development plan for the Kochi city region, covering the corporation and five adjoining municipalities and ten panchayats, set to be finalised this November proposes a string of major roads for easing the traffic congestion.
A major proposal is to develop the Container Terminal Road as a 45-metre-wide road for exclusive movement of containers from Vallarpadam to the northern side. Equally significant would be a link road, the alignment of which would be decided only after detailed studies, proposed from the Container Terminal road to link it with NH 47 at a point beyond Angamaly so as to reduce the congestion in the Kochi city region. The plan proposes to utilise inland water ways for container movement towards the southern side.
A 27-metre-wide road linking old NH at Edakochi and NH 47 at Kumbalam has been proposed to increase the connectivity from Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Chellanam, and Kumbalanghi area to the new proposed transit oriented development corridor.
