Mazagon Dock Joins Bid to Anchor Andhra Pradesh’s Ambitious Shipbuilding Project.
State-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) is likely to emerge as the anchor investor for the proposed mega shipbuilding facility at Dugarajapatnam in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati district, according to a senior government official.
Representatives of the Mumbai-based shipbuilder are expected to visit Dugarajapatnam in the coming weeks to assess the site and evaluate the feasibility of participating in the project as the lead investor, the official said.
The Andhra Pradesh government and the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), representing the Centre, have already formed a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to develop the shipbuilding cluster, which is planned with an annual capacity of 1.2 million tonnes.
The project entails a total investment of ₹29,253 crore. Under the proposed structure, the government will undertake land acquisition and marine infrastructure development at an estimated cost of ₹5,289 crore. The anchor investor will be responsible for developing the core shipbuilding cluster, requiring an investment of about ₹23,964 crore.
The proposed facility is expected to bolster India’s shipbuilding capabilities and support the country’s ambitions of becoming a major global maritime manufacturing hub.
