MP Telecom Manufacturing Zone an Extension of PLI Initiative, Says Scindia

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently said the proposed Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ) in Madhya Pradesh should be viewed as an extension of the government's production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, as it will offer substantial incentives to investors while boosting domestic telecom manufacturing.

Speaking at the Telecom Manufacturing Zone Investors Meet in Mumbai, Scindia said the upcoming facility in Gwalior—the country's first and only Telecom Manufacturing Zone planned by the Centre—is expected to attract investments of ₹10,000-12,000 crore over two phases.

The zone will focus on manufacturing 5G and 6G telecom equipment, semiconductors and optical fibre products, strengthening India's telecom manufacturing ecosystem.

"You can think of this TMZ as an extension of the PLI. There is close to ₹12,000 crore worth of investments in this TMZ. Investors will almost get ₹7,000-8,000 crore worth of incentives back. So in a way this is also a PLI," Scindia said while responding to a question on sustaining production volumes under the PLI scheme.

Scindia said the Telecom Manufacturing Zone would be the only such facility established by the government, underscoring its role as a dedicated manufacturing hub for next-generation telecom technologies.
