Mumbai Metro Line 3 Prepares for Launch: MMRCL Starts Safety Approval Process with CMRS

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), the agency behind the Metro 3 corridor project, has submitted its first key application to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) as part of the process to secure official approval for the new line.

The application, filed last week, seeks certification for the rolling stock, including the train sets that will operate on the Aarey-BKC stretch of Metro 3. The CMRS approval process involves rigorous inspections, trial runs, and evaluations of the trains' design, braking systems, fire safety, and signaling systems.

MMRCL's Director of Projects, S.K. Gupta, confirmed the submission of the first application. “We are preparing to submit the second application, which concerns the safety certification of the entire 10 km stretch between Aarey and BKC, by next week,” said MMRCL's Managing Director, Ashwini Bhide.

The second application will trigger a detailed safety inspection by the CMRS, covering the entire Metro line, including tracks, stations, signaling systems, electrification, and rolling stock integration. The inspection will include comprehensive trial runs to ensure smooth operation and the verification of critical emergency systems, such as fire safety measures and evacuation protocols.

MMRCL aims to open Phase I of Metro 3, covering the Aarey-BKC section, later this month, pending CMRS approval.
