Mumbai Suburban Rail Project Gets ₹21,000 Crore Boost with New Rolling Stock Tender.
The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has issued a massive e-tender worth ₹21,000 crore for the procurement and maintenance of 2,856 new air-conditioned Vande Metro coaches. The ambitious project is a part of the Mumbai Suburban Rail Project and aims to modernize the city's lifeline.
The tender calls for the supply and maintenance of broad-gauge coaches in 12, 15, and 18-car configurations. According to MRVC officials, these new coaches will significantly boost passenger capacity, comfort, and safety across the city's rail network.
The contract includes the supply of the rolling stock and a comprehensive 35-year maintenance agreement. It also mandates the establishment of two new maintenance depots and the upgrade of existing carsheds to handle the new Vande Metro rakes.
The bid submission period for interested companies is set to begin on December 8, 2025, with bids scheduled to be opened on December 22, 2025. The entire project is slated for completion within 90 months. The first prototype rake is expected to arrive in Mumbai approximately two years after the contract is officially awarded.
In line with the government's "Make in India" initiative, the tender will prioritize domestic manufacturing and technology integration, as reported by the Times of India.
