Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced on Monday that Bengaluru’s metro network is on track to reach 175 km of operational lines by December 2027. The ambitious expansion is a cornerstone of the state government’s strategy to tackle the city’s notorious traffic congestion.
Speaking after a progress review with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials, Shivakumar highlighted the immediate impact of recent expansions and outlined a strict three-year roadmap for upcoming phases.
Easing the Gridlock: The Yellow Line Success
The Deputy CM noted that the recently operationalized 24-km Yellow Line has already transformed commuting patterns in the city.
High Ridership: The line is currently seeing a daily footfall of 1 lakh passengers.
Traffic Reduction: According to police data, road traffic along the Yellow Line corridor has decreased by approximately 30% since its launch.
"Our government is working toward easing traffic congestion in the city," Shivakumar stated. "Currently, 96 km of the metro network is operational, and we are seeing the tangible benefits of these new stretches."
The Roadmap to 175 KM
The government has set clear milestones for the next two years to nearly double the current footprint:
| Timeline | Goal | Key Highlights |
| Current | 96 km | Operational network including the Yellow Line. |
| By 2026 | +41 km | New stretches to be operationalized. |
| By Dec 2027 | +38 km | Includes the critical Airport Line connection. |
| Total Reach | 175 km | Full network capacity by end of 2027. |
Future Expansion: Reaching the Outskirts
Looking beyond 2027, Shivakumar revealed that the state is already planning further extensions to connect Bengaluru’s satellite towns. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are currently being prepared to extend the metro to:
Tavarekere
Hosakote
Bidadi
Nelamangala
These extensions aim to provide seamless connectivity for long-distance commuters and further decentralize the city's growth.
