NHAI and Railways Collaborate to Decongest Trichy's G Corner Junction.
The Indian Railways has agreed to provide land to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the construction of a vehicular underpass (VuP) at the G Corner junction in Trichy. The decision comes after a joint inspection conducted on Saturday under the supervision of Trichy MP Durai Vaiko.
The Chennai-Trichy-Madurai National Highway, which opened about 15 years ago, lacks a service road or underpass for vehicles approaching the Ponmalai railway workshop. As a result, vehicles are often forced to drive on the wrong side of the road, causing inconvenience and increasing the risk of accidents.
NHAI has already prepared a preliminary design for the underpass. According to officials, around 3,100 square meters of railway land will be required to connect the two service roads on either side of the highway. During the inspection, Trichy Divisional Railway Manager M.S. Anbalagan and NHAI Project Director Praveen Kumar expressed their commitment to addressing the design shortcomings of the Chennai-Trichy-Madurai NH.
"Next week, we will begin a fresh survey to determine the exact amount of railway land needed for the underpass at G Corner," said Praveen Kumar. "The service roads will also be modified to allow vehicles from TVS Tollgate to access the G Corner underpass. This will help vehicles heading to Chennai and Madurai bypass the junction entirely."
Railway authorities noted that railway employees are particularly affected by the current design flaws, and they assured that efforts would be made to facilitate the land handover. Over the past three years, seven fatal accidents have occurred at G Corner.
MP Durai Vaiko said, "The suggestions and demands from both NHAI and the railways have been documented. I will coordinate with senior officials in the Union government to secure funding for the project as soon as possible."
The proposed underpass will feature a height clearance of 18 feet to accommodate heavy vehicles approaching the railway workshop.
