"NHAI targets the Narsingpur bottleneck with plans for a new 3-km flyover aimed at streamlining traffic flow on the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway."
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to construct a three-kilometre flyover at Narsingpur along the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway to ease chronic traffic congestion on one of the city’s busiest stretches.
The proposal was discussed during a review meeting held recently in Delhi between NHAI chairman Santosh Kumar and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) CEO P.C. Meena. Kumar directed officials to begin preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed flyover.
The stretch between the Hero Honda Chowk flyover and the Dwarka Expressway cloverleaf is a known bottleneck, where traffic slows as vehicles merge from a four-lane section into a three-lane carriageway near Narsingpur. Poor service road conditions, unauthorised cuts, and heavy local traffic from nearby villages and industrial units further worsen congestion, particularly during peak hours.
An NHAI official said the proposal is currently at a conceptual stage and that the final alignment, design and lane configuration will be determined after detailed studies.
Officials said the meeting focused on road infrastructure upgrades, congestion mitigation, improved connectivity and public safety, with both agencies agreeing to closely coordinate on implementation. Decongestion of Rajeev Chowk was a key priority, with plans for two elevated grade separators to improve traffic flow.
To ease movement between Delhi and Sohna, NHAI has proposed a left-turn elevated ramp from NH-8 to NH-248A for vehicles travelling towards Sohna, along with an exit to the service road. For traffic moving from Sohna towards Delhi, a right-turn elevated ramp is proposed to connect NH-248A with NH-8, including access from the NH-248A service road. The measures aim to improve connectivity towards the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway.
Officials said stakeholder consultations will be undertaken to address bottlenecks, including land-related issues that may affect construction of the proposed elevated corridors.
Drainage and waterlogging issues were also discussed. GMDA said it is laying a stormwater drain up to Badshapur to address waterlogging along the Narsingpur service lane, while NHAI will construct a culvert on NH-8. Both agencies will jointly prepare an execution plan for the work.
Pedestrian safety along NH-8 was another focus area, with proposals to construct foot overbridges (FOBs) at multiple locations. GMDA will identify the required stretches, while NHAI will undertake construction. The FOBs, equipped with ramps and lifts, will be handed over to GMDA for maintenance after completion.
Waterlogging and flooding at underpasses during the monsoon season were also reviewed, with both agencies agreeing to conduct joint inspections and take up necessary works to strengthen stormwater drainage connectivity ahead of the monsoon
