Nokia and Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya Sign MoU for 5G/6G Communications Research
Finnish telecom giant Nokia announced on Monday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Vadodara-based Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV). The partnership will focus on research opportunities in 5G/6G communications, targeting air, land, and sea transportation use cases, standards development, smart factory/automation, and AI/Gen AI labs.
This collaboration will leverage Nokia’s network as code platform, developer portal, and digital twins for the transportation and logistics sectors. Research will also focus on fiber sensing, AI, and optical network planning.
GSV, a university under the Ministry of Railways, signed the MoU in the presence of Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Telecom, and IT, who also serves as the Chancellor of GSV. Vaishnaw highlighted the potential impact of this collaboration on the telecommunications and transportation sectors. He emphasized the university's commitment to industry-driven initiatives that align with the vision of a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India).
Vaishnaw also noted GSV's rapid emergence as a leading institution comparable to the IITs. He acknowledged the significance of the three MoUs signed, including those with Plasser India and Jacob, focusing on fostering industry-academia partnerships to prepare students for the workforce by their final year.
Raghav Sahgal, President of Cloud and Network Services at Nokia, stated that this agreement aligns with Nokia’s strategy of leveraging the broader B2B digital ecosystem. He praised GSV’s reputation for research and innovation, anticipating a fruitful partnership that will benefit both parties and their stakeholders.
GSV has also established collaborations with global and national institutions and industries, including Airbus, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Nippon Koei, Siemens, DPIIT, Karmayogi Bharat, VLSI Society of India, and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. Additionally, it has academic partnerships with IIM-Mumbai, BITS Pilani, IIT-Gandhinagar, IIT-Jodhpur, NITTTR Bhopal, PGUPS Moscow, and the Indian Maritime University.
