NTPC Group Targets 5 GW Pumped Storage Capacity by FY32, Developing 20 GW Portfolio.

The NTPC Group is aggressively pursuing the development of pumped storage projects (PSPs) across India, with a total pipeline capacity reaching an impressive 20 GW. A senior company official confirmed this ambitious initiative, highlighting the state-owned power generator's commitment to enhancing grid stability and renewable energy integration.

The company has set a target to commission between 3 to 5 GW of these pumped storage projects by the fiscal year 2031-32. This significant push into pumped hydro energy storage underscores NTPC's strategic vision for a more robust and sustainable energy future.

"The NTPC Group is working on a pipeline of pumped storage projects to the tune of 20 GW in NTPC and its hydro subsidiaries," the official stated, emphasizing the scale of the undertaking.

Pumped storage projects are crucial for grid balancing, especially as India integrates more intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. They store excess electricity by pumping water uphill to a reservoir and then release it to generate power when demand is high, acting as large-scale natural batteries. This initiative is expected to play a vital role in India's energy transition and its goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
