Pasir Panjang to add 16 berths

Singapore: A report in the Straits Times suggests that Singapore is to add 16 new berths to its Pasir Panjang terminal in next five years. The cost is estimated at $1.83 billion. This follows projection of steady growth in the port’s container throughput – an estimated 27 million TEUs in 2008, to double by 2013. Over the past 10 years, PSA has invested more than five billion in Singapore dollars to develop 26 berths in Pasir Panjang. Thirteen of them ar e already operational and another 13 are to go on stream by 2009. But if the rate of growth of traffic exceeds the projections, the port authorities might be forced to add new berths. For example, there are already proposals for phase III and IV expansions of Pasir Panjang terminal. In 2006, the container through of the port was 24 million TEUs, and till November this year 25.45 million TEUs.
