PETRONET MHB Launches Water Disinfection Plant at NITK.

A water disinfection plant with a capacity of one million litres per day was recently inaugurated at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) campus in Surathkal, Mangaluru.

The facility will treat raw water sourced from tube wells and open wells on the campus, supplementing the water supply from the Mangaluru City Corporation. The water undergoes a two-stage filtration process followed by chlorination and ozonation, effectively removing excess iron and other waterborne contaminants.

The project has been funded by PETRONET MHB Ltd under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative for 2025–26.

Speaking at the inauguration, Sudhir Kumar, Managing Director of PETRONET MHB and an alumnus of NITK’s 1989 Mechanical Engineering batch, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to CSR and societal wellbeing. He added that the plant will benefit several thousand students, staff, and faculty residing on campus.
