Plan to widen Karur - Coimbatore road.
The National Highways road from Karur to Coimbatore has been handed over to the National Highways wing of the State Highways Department for maintenance work.
An official of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) told The Hindu recently that the road was handed over nearly three months ago.
Meanwhile, survey is on and a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared to widen the road into a four-lane one. The road will be taken over by NHAI again after completing the DPR and it will be widened. The proposal is to widen the two-lane road (NH 67) into a four-lane one and develop four bypasses, he said.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee member here Irugur Subramanaiam said that one of the long-pending demands of the public of Sulur and nearby areas is widening of the stretch from Kangayampalayam to Chinthamanipudur (7.5 km) into a four-lane one. The number of accidents is on the rise in this stretch and in the last three years, the public staged protests and submitted memorandum to officials of the State and Central Governments in this regard.
