"Polavaram Link Controversy: Fresh tensions erupt between Telangana and AP over Godavari water diversion."
A fresh dispute has erupted between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh over the proposed Polavaram–Nallamala Sagar project on the Godavari river, with Telangana strongly opposing Andhra Pradesh’s move to take up the project.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy held discussions with senior Supreme Court advocate Abhishek Singhvi in Mumbai on Sunday to chalk out the State’s legal strategy. Meanwhile, Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy asserted that Telangana would not compromise on the issue and would resist Andhra Pradesh’s actions “tooth and nail.”
On Monday, appearing on behalf of the Telangana government in the Supreme Court, Mr. Singhvi sought the court’s intervention to restrain Andhra Pradesh from diverting more than 200 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water from the Polavaram project. He argued that the proposed diversion to Banakacherla or Nallamala Sagar was being justified under the pretext of channelising excess floodwaters of the Godavari, a move Telangana contends would adversely affect its interests.
The issue has added to the growing tensions between the two States over the sharing and utilisation of Godavari river waters.
