Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has reaffirmed that the Polavaram Project will be completed by 2027, emphasizing its significance as the state’s lifeline. Speaking to the media on Thursday after inspecting the ongoing construction, Naidu assured that the rehabilitation of all displaced families would be completed before the release of water from the project.
“The project will not be inaugurated until the rehabilitation process is fully completed,” he stated, interacting with affected families. He also conducted an aerial survey of the project site to assess progress.
Commitment to Rehabilitation
Naidu highlighted the state government’s responsibility to ensure justice for those displaced by the project. He alleged that only nominal compensation had been paid before the TDP-led NDA government came to power in 2014, which then disbursed ₹4,311 crore for rehabilitation. However, he accused the previous YSR Congress Party government (2019-24) of neglecting the issue entirely.
“As seven mandals in Telangana needed to be merged with Andhra Pradesh for the project, we successfully convinced the then Prime Minister. After returning to power in 2024, our government deposited ₹829 crore into the accounts of displaced families,” Naidu stated.
Ensuring Fair Compensation
He assured affected residents that the rehabilitation process would be completed transparently by 2027, preventing any involvement of middlemen or fraudulent activities.
“Some families have raised concerns about their names being removed from compensation lists. We will conduct an inquiry and ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive their rightful compensation,” Naidu said.
The Polavaram Project, a multi-purpose irrigation and hydropower initiative, is expected to significantly enhance water resources and boost agricultural development in Andhra Pradesh.
