"Progress Halts on Karnataka-Andhra Railway Line"

The completion of the Tumakuru-Rayadurg railway line, crucial for bolstering connectivity between Bengaluru and Ballari, faces delays as the onus falls on the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh governments, according to recent statements from the Centre.

Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted in a parliamentary reply that the project's advancement relies on a 50:50 cost-sharing basis between the Government of India and the state governments of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. With an estimated project cost of Rs 2,404 crore, significant expenditure has already been incurred, including the commissioning of the 83 km-long Rayadurga-Doddahalli section. However, further progress necessitates expedited land acquisition efforts and financial contributions from both states.

The Rayadurg-Tumakuru project aims to offer an alternative rail route from Bengaluru to Guntakal and Ballari, aiming to alleviate congestion on existing routes. However, land acquisition challenges persist, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, where required land parcels are yet to be acquired.

The AP government's reluctance to honor the cost-sharing agreement, specifically concerning land acquisition costs, has raised concerns, potentially jeopardizing the project's timeline. Railways assert that projects of such magnitude cannot solely rely on their funds, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts.

Despite these challenges, Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the multifaceted nature of railway project completion, highlighting the necessity of prompt land acquisition, regulatory clearances, and environmental considerations. Despite constraints, efforts are underway to expedite project execution.
