Proposal to re-lay 1,000 roads dropped.
The Chennai Corporation has dropped the proposal to re-lay 1,000 roads owing to infrastructure projects hanging fire.
The civic body had proposed to re-lay 5,127 roads in various parts of the city. However, agencies such as Metrowater have refused to issue ‘no objection certificates’ for re-laying 1,000 of these roads.
“We have dropped these roads. The number of roads to be re-laid has reduced to 4,124,” said an official of Chennai Corporation.
The first phase of re-laying in 2,000 interior roads will be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs.150 crore shortly. The bids will be finalised this month. In 2013, the Corporation council proposed to develop as many as 18,000 interior roads. But most of these roads have not been re-laid.
Chennai Corporation officials said the re-laying work would begin after the monsoon. Work on 2,000 roads would be completed by March 2016.
