RPG group plans to set up school in Kolkata

Kolkata: The Rs 13,500-crore turnover RPG Group has proposed to set up an 'international quality' school with hostel facilities in Kolkata. The group has requested the State Government to allocate five acres of land at Rajarhat for the purpose, according to Mr Sanjiv Goenka, Vice-Chairman of the RPG Group.

Speaking to newspersons after a meeting with the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, at Writers' Buildings here, Mr Goenka said the school would have classes from nursery to Class XII. He said work on the project would begin as soon as the land for the school is allocated. The Chairman Emeritus of the RPG Group and Chairman of CESC Ltd, Mr R.P. Goenka, was also present a the meeting with the Chief Minister.

Mr Goenka said he apprised the Chief Minister of the progress of several ongoing projects of the RPG group in the State.

These included augmentation of the capacity of CSEC's Budge Budge power plant from 500 MW at present to 750 MW, expansion of the capacity of Philips Carbon Black factory at Durgapur, the Management Institute and the Park Circus Mall. Together, these projects entail an investment of Rs 13,050 crore.

Asked about the power shortage in the CESC-served areas of greater Kolkata, Mr Goenka said the power demand in the city had gone up 'beyond anticipation' and efforts were being taken to `minimise the inconvenience' suffered by the people. Power generation by CESC at 970 MW was at 100 per cent of capacity.

During peak period, the city consumes 1,450 MW of power. Beyond its own generation, CESC also draws power from the state grid.
