State Highways Department Launches 975-Metre Flyover Construction on Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road to Ease Traffic Congestion.

On Monday, the National Highways (NH) wing of the state highways department commenced construction of a new flyover on Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the area. Spanning 975 meters from Alagesan Road Junction to Eru Company, the flyover will be 16.61 meters wide and designed to accommodate four lanes of traffic.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has allocated ₹75 crore for the project, which will involve the construction of 23 pillars and 22 decks. The flyover is expected to be completed within two years.

The project will be executed in three phases, starting with the excavation of deep pits to establish six pillars, according to an NH wing official. The contract for the construction has been awarded to KCP Infra Ltd., with the contractor instructed to deploy additional workforce to ensure timely completion.

Despite the extensive work, no land acquisition is required, as the flyover will be constructed within the existing road space, allowing for minimal disruption to traffic flow. However, peak-hour congestion may see some delays.

Currently, two other flyovers are in place on Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road at Kavundampalayam and GN Mills.

Additionally, MoRTH has sanctioned funds for a new flyover on Trichy Road at Singanallur. The NH wing is preparing for the retendering process, and construction will begin once a contract is awarded.

Plans for a flyover at Saravanampatti on Coimbatore–Sathyamangalam Road are under consideration. However, the project’s timeline depends on coordination with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), which is planning to erect pillars for its metro rail project in the same area. Approval from CMRL is awaited before moving forward with the tendering process.
