Swelect’s New CEO Halts Solar Cell Project, Sets Sights on BESS Expansion

Dr. Arul Shanmugasundaram, the new CEO of Swelect Energy Systems Ltd, has outlined a revised strategy for the company that includes dropping its earlier plan to set up a solar cell manufacturing plant. Instead, Swelect will secure a long-term supply agreement with an Indian cell manufacturer.

The agreement is expected to be finalised in the coming months, though Shanmugasundaram declined to name the partner due to a non-disclosure agreement. The domestically produced cells will meet local content requirements under government norms.

He noted that cell manufacturing in India faces challenges, including a shortage of skilled talent and uncertainty around wafer availability, as China remains the dominant supplier.
