Tata Motors Boosts Electric Punch Capacity

Tata Motors has taken significant steps to meet the growing demand for its electric vehicle, Punch, by ramping up its production capacity. Punch marks the debut of Tata's electric vehicle architecture, acti.ev.

Introduced in January at an initial price of ₹10.99 lakh, Punch.ev offers variants tailored to different driving needs. Prices can go up to ₹14.49 lakh, depending on the specifications. The vehicle boasts a top speed of 140 kmph and is equipped with a 25kWh battery pack, providing a range of 315 km. Additionally, a longer-range version of Punch.ev comes with a 35kWh battery pack, offering an extended range of 421 km.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, highlighted the strong demand and booking numbers for Punch during the company's earnings call. While specific booking figures weren't disclosed, Chandra emphasized the company's commitment to ramping up production swiftly to meet customer demand without causing excessive waiting periods.

Punch.ev Long Range (LR) models offer the flexibility of either a 3.3kW or a 7.2 kW AC fast charger, suitable for home or workplace installations.

Looking ahead, Tata Motors plans to introduce two more electric vehicle models in CY24: Curvv and Harrier electric vehicles. Curvv is expected to launch in the second quarter of the financial year 2025, followed by the Harrier EV. The company aims to maintain a balance between electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) models, ensuring distinct segments and price points to prevent cannibalization among its products.

With a focus on expanding electric vehicle penetration, Tata Motors has adopted a micro-market strategy, targeting 15 to 20 cities. The recent launch of Punch, alongside existing offerings like Nexon.ev, which provides a range of 450 kilometers, aims to cater to diverse consumer preferences and drive the growth of the electric vehicle market in India.
