Tata Steel has started production from its coke oven unit at Kalinga Nagar plant, which is targeted to commission integrated steel production in December this year.

Tata Steel is setting up a six million tonne greenfield steel project at Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur district of Odisha with the first phase comprising 3 million tonne steel capacity.

The company has already pumped in about Rs. 22,000 crore till date out of Rs. 25164 crore estimated first phase cost.

Out of two coke oven batteries built in the steel mill complex, one battery with 1.5 million tonne capacity has gone on stream. The heating process of this coke oven battery was started in May.

The construction of the second coke over battery, with same capacity, is also near complete and its heating process will start soon, sources said.

Coke oven is a key component of the steel mill and coke produced there is charged with iron ore in the blast furnace to produce hot metal.

The coke produced at the unit will be stacked up for use later when the blast furnace of the steel mill becomes operational, sources added.
