Tech Mahindra's Project Indus to Develop Small Language Model on a Chip.

Tech Mahindra’s Project Indus, India Inc’s first homegrown initiative to develop a cost-effective large language model (LLM), is expanding its scope with plans to build a Bengali LLM and an agentic application in Hindi and its regional dialects.

The LLM, accessible via the Project Indus website, has already seen 8,000 downloads. “The idea is to make the model available to a wider Indian audience,” said Nikhil Malhotra, Chief Innovation Officer & Global Head of AI and Emerging Technologies at Tech Mahindra. He also noted that Project Indus served as an inspiration for Sahabat-AI, a sovereign LLM developed for Indonesia in Bahasa.

“We are expanding Hindi language and dialects for our agentic solutions, and we are also broadening our data set. The next language we are focusing on is Bengali,” Malhotra added.

Agentic applications, typically powered by LLMs, are AI-driven software systems capable of autonomously achieving user goals.
