Telangana Assembly Approves Resolution to Take Over Hyderabad Metro Phase-I from L&T.

The Telangana Government has cleared a resolution to take over the Hyderabad Metro Phase I network from L&T, paving the way for the state-led expansion of the city’s metro rail system.

The decision comes after a detailed review of challenges and hurdles associated with the Metro Rail expansion, taking into account public demand and broader societal interests. Currently, Phase I spans 69 km under private management, while proposals for Phase II(A) covering 76.4 km and Phase II(B) covering 86.1 km have been submitted to the Union Government.

The Telangana Assembly approved the state government’s plan to acquire Phase I operations through the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), considering technical, legal, and operational aspects. The House expressed full support for the initiative and urged the government to secure central approval for Phase II expeditiously.

The move is part of a broader agenda by the Telangana State Cabinet, which recently approved several legislative and policy measures, including the Telangana Hate Speech and Hate Crime Prevention Bill, 2026. The legislation aims to curb divisive content and rhetoric that could disrupt communal harmony, reflecting the state’s efforts to strengthen governance while responding to emerging social and economic challenges.
