Thimpu gets largest substation

Thimphu: Trade and industries minister, Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk inaugurated the substation more than a year and a half after Tala hydroelectric project authority (THPA) handed it over to Bhutan power corporation in July last year.

While THPA had constructed the substation at the cost of Nu 1124.164 million, another 66 kV multi-circuit transmission line was constructed by BPC, funded from its internal resources at a cost of Nu 558.407 million.

According to BPCL executive director, Gem Tshering, this was aimed at easing power shortage to the industries in Pasakha, as new industries were made to halt owing to power shortage.

According to Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk, the substation having interlinked power supply from both Chukha and Tala power stations could enable continuous supply within and outside the country.

“In case a line was disturbed from the Chukha supply line, the substation can still receive power supply from Tala power station without effecting the distribution,” he said.
