The Tamil Nadu Energy Department has unveiled a comprehensive plan with an outlay exceeding ₹2,700 crore aimed at bolstering the state's power infrastructure. This initiative encompasses upgrades to existing coal-based power plants, the establishment of new transmission substations, and the potential addition of a new 600 MW thermal power unit in Thoothukudi.
A significant portion of this investment, amounting to ₹1,192 crore, will be channeled through the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd (TANTRANSCO) for the development of 12 new substations. This includes one 400 kV substation and eleven 110 kV substations, strategically located to strengthen the state's power transmission network and ensure a more stable and reliable electricity supply.
Furthermore, the state government has allocated ₹500 crore for essential maintenance and upgrades at key thermal power stations operated by the Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL). These include facilities in Mettur, Thoothukudi, and North Chennai, ensuring the continued efficient operation of these vital power sources.
In addition to these measures, TNPGCL's Valuthur Gas Power Station – I will undergo significant improvements under a ₹111 crore project. This includes a critical hot gas path inspection of its 95 MW turbine and enhancements to its Dry Low Nitrogen Oxide (DLN) control system, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing emissions.
State Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji, in his address to the Assembly on Tuesday, emphasized the state government's commitment to ensuring a consistent and high-quality power supply for all. These strategic investments in both power generation and transmission infrastructure underscore Tamil Nadu's proactive approach to meeting its growing energy demands and maintaining a robust power grid.
