TN to create transmission entity for merchant power projects

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to create a transmission corporation to link the proposed merchant power projects with the power grid, according to an official press release.

The release quoting the Electricity Minister, Mr Arcot N. Veeraswamy, said that with State Government clearing over 20 merchant power projects, they are expected to generate over 25,000 MW over the next three years.

The power from these facilities will have to be supplied to the Northern and Southern States. The Chairman of the Transmission Corporation will be the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the Board’s Chief Engineer (Transmission) will act as its Managing Director, the release said.

The Minister has clarified that the TNEB has been an exception to the provision of the Central Electricity Act, 2003, which calls for unbundling of the electricity board
