Torrent Group Commissions Green Hydrogen Plant in Gorakhpur, Inaugurated by Yogi Adityanath.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath inaugurated Green Hydrogen Plant developed by the Torrent Group in Gorakhpur, marking a significant milestone in the state's clean energy transition.

The project has been jointly developed by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, two entities of the Torrent Group. The facility, established by Torrent Power, has an annual production capacity of 72 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen.

The green hydrogen generated at the plant will be blended with natural gas at concentrations of up to 2% through Torrent Gas' City Gas Distribution (CGD) network in Gorakhpur. The blended fuel will then be supplied to domestic households, CNG stations, and industrial consumers across the region using the existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure.

According to the company, the Gorakhpur facility is the first Green Hydrogen Plant in Uttar Pradesh and the largest Green Hydrogen-Natural Gas blending project in India's City Gas Distribution sector.

Torrent Gas has been authorized by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) to provide Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) services in the districts of Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Kushinagar. The company has already established 32 CNG stations in the region and currently supplies gas to more than 12,000 households and 73 industrial and commercial establishments. It plans to further expand its gas distribution infrastructure in the area.

Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower. Unlike conventional hydrogen derived from fossil fuels, green hydrogen produces no direct carbon emissions. Its blending with natural gas helps lower carbon emissions, utilizes existing gas infrastructure, and supports the development of an early hydrogen economy.

The inauguration of the project underscores growing efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions and accelerate the adoption of low-carbon technologies in India's energy sector.
