"Trichy Corporation Completes Phase II of Underground Drainage Project"

Trichy Corporation has officially completed Phase II of its underground drainage (UGD) project, marking a significant milestone in improving the city's infrastructure. This phase involved the installation of 287 km of sewers, offering much-needed relief to residents previously affected by poor road conditions.

With only a 17 km stretch pending across various phases, including Phase III and the Smart Cities Mission scheme, the corporation has secured ₹8.6 crore from the state government to repair the damaged roads.

Currently, approximately 33% of the city is covered by the UGD network. When Phases II and III are fully operational, nearly 75% of the city will be connected to the sewage network. Despite launching the project in three phases between July 2018 and July 2021, the initiative faced delays due to challenges such as Covid-19 lockdowns, raw material shortages, and difficult soil conditions.

Phase III requires the installation of pipelines for about 10 km, while 7 km of the existing UGD network in core city areas still needs revamping. To date, Trichy Corporation has completed 94,413 house service connections (HSC) out of a total of 111,564 across all phases. Phase II has 50 pending HSCs, while Phase III and the revamping projects have 2,704 and 14,397 pending HSCs, respectively.

Mu Anbalagan, Mayor of Trichy Corporation, stated, “We aim to complete the UGD phases and repair the damaged roads before the onset of the northeast monsoon. Out of the 746 km of roads affected by the UGD projects, we have already relaid 674 km. The remaining 72 km will be completed before the monsoon.”

In the coming weeks, work will begin on relaying 77 roads, totaling 12 km. Additional roads where UGD projects have been completed will be relaid using general funds. With ongoing projects nearing completion, Trichy Corporation also announced that Phase IV of the UGD project, which will cover the remaining areas, will commence soon.
