The Trichy Corporation has announced plans to develop a 10 km link road along the Koraiyar and Kudamurutti rivers to connect the forthcoming Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) in Panjapur with various residential neighborhoods in Trichy. The project, which will be executed in three phases, has received administrative approval for one phase with a budget allocation of ₹68 crore.
The proposed road will span approximately 9 meters in width and feature elevated sections at five strategic locations, totaling around 5 km in length. These elevated stretches will be constructed at the Rajiv Gandhi Nagar railway crossing (E Pudur), Dindigul NH (Karumandapam), Kuzhumayee Amman temple (behind the district collector’s office), Vayalur Road (MM Nagar), and Karur NH (near Kudamurutti). Additionally, a 400-meter approach road will be built at major intersections and narrow stretches.
An elevated segment near the Kudamurutti bridge on the Trichy-Karur NH is also planned, potentially integrating with the Kalaignar Arivalayam flyover proposed by the state highways department.
The project will require land acquisition for approximately 9 acres. A senior Trichy Corporation official indicated that land will be acquired through negotiations and a cooperative approach. Upon receiving technical approval from the municipal administration department, tenders will be issued to commence construction. The total cost of the project is estimated at ₹367 crore.
The new link road aims to alleviate congestion in densely populated areas like Karumandapam and Vayalur Road and bolster the flood-prone banks of the Koraiyar and Kudamurutti rivers, thereby reducing flood risks in adjacent residential neighborhoods.
H Ghouse Baid, a resident of Khajamalai, expressed optimism about the project, stating, “Work should be completed on time since the new road will connect Karumandapam and Vayalur Road, two densely populated residential areas.”
