Tuticorin port buys hydraulic grabs for log handling

Madurai: The Tuticorin port’s capacity to handle logs manually got increased with the commissioning of two sets of hydraulic grabs and specially designed loaders for the first time.

Acquired by St. John’s Freight Systems, Tuticorin, the equipment would ensure the safety of dock workers, improve productivity and facilitate quick turnaround time of ships and help to attract in addition, more volume of logs and timber through the port, according to Mr A. Subbiah, Deputy Chairman, Tuticorin Port Trust.

The acquisition has been made in line with a decision taken at a recent safety committee meeting, he mentioned.

The equipments have been imported at a cost of Rs 3 crore. The hydraulic grabs are from Germany and the loaders are from Sweden.

The acquisition would help to improve the handling capacity by 125 per cent.
