University, Rly Sign Mou To Set Railway Tech Center.

University of Mumbai and Indian Railways have joined hands in the field of education and technology and have planned to set a 'Rail Innovation and Technology Center' at the university’s sub campus. In a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that was signed by authorities from both the agencies, the Railways agreed to allocate Rs. 142.89 crore budget in next five academic years.

The University of Mumbai has agreed to provide education, distribution of facilities for higher education, effective administration and financial control and impart practical training to the candidates at university’s Kalina, Ratnagiri and Kalyan sub campus. Railway had identified its challegnes and put forward them for easy solution through new innovations and research. The new center will innovate and research in the railway-fields like rail and wheel interactions, dynamic modeling, noise and vibration control, tunnel, bridges, high speed rails, signal and systems.

Sources said that the University of Mumbai will start new courses like M Tech/ME in Railway Mechanical Engineering, M Tch/ME in Railway Civic Engineering, M Tech/ME in Railway Electrial Engineering.

In the first year, Railways will giver Rs.25 crore for infrastructure like construction of building, campus development, laboratory, equipments and other expenses.

According to officials, as per the Railways Vision 2020, it will develop cutting edge indigenous technologies and will turn into net exporter of technology. A Railway official said, 'Sustained research at higher level is the need of the hour. Professional graduates from this institute will be abreast with the latest technological developments in the field.'

University Registar Dr M. A. Khan described this MoU as landmark. “The center will train engineers for expertise in Railway technology,” he said.
