Uttar Pradesh Secures Regulatory Nod for Power Supply from Bhutan Hydroelectric Project.

Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) has secured approval from the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) to procure electricity from the 511-MW Khorluchu Hydro Power project in Bhutan, strengthening the state's long-term clean energy portfolio.

The Khorluchu Hydro Power project is being developed by Khorluchu Hydro Power Ltd (KHPL), a joint venture between Tata Power and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation.

According to sources, UPPCL had approached the state regulator seeking approval to purchase power from the project at a fixed tariff of ₹6.75 per unit under a 30-year agreement. UPERC has now granted the necessary clearance for the procurement.

The move is expected to enhance Uttar Pradesh’s access to renewable energy while diversifying its power supply sources through cross-border hydropower imports. The project also reflects growing energy cooperation between India and Bhutan, with hydropower continuing to play a key role in regional electricity trade.

Once operational, the 511-MW project will contribute to Uttar Pradesh’s efforts to meet rising electricity demand with a greater share of clean energy in its generation mix.
