In a significant stride towards organized urban development, Vapi City has received approval for its first-ever draft town planning (TP) scheme from the state government earlier this week. This pivotal development empowers the newly formed Vapi Municipal Corporation (VMC) to undertake planned development activities across the city.
Prior to this approval, no TP scheme had been sanctioned since the establishment of the Vapi municipality in 1995. The VMC, which commenced operations in January 2025, has now taken a foundational step towards structured urban planning.
Following the clearance of TP scheme No. 1, the VMC has appointed a dedicated town planner. The approved scheme encompasses an area of approximately 126 hectares located to the west of the Custom Frontier Road, extending from the southern end of the GST Bhavan up to Namdha village. The VMC also disclosed that it is concurrently working on the preparation of three additional TP schemes for the Dungra area.
Yogesh Chaudhary, the Municipal Commissioner of VMC, highlighted the transformative potential of the scheme. "The TP scheme will enable well-planned development in the area. Every internal plot will be connected through proper road infrastructure," Chaudhary stated. He added that the scheme will address existing challenges where developers currently need to acquire extra land to provide road access to plots lacking connectivity, and will also resolve issues of unevenly shaped and scattered plots resulting from fragmented ownership.
The implementation of the TP scheme will pave the way for the systematic provision of essential services such as water supply, drainage, and electricity, following the construction of planned roads. Furthermore, the corporation will receive designated land parcels for developing public amenities like gardens and affordable housing, including provisions for economically weaker sections. The scheme also incorporates plans for improving recreational spaces, hospitals, and libraries.
"This is Vapi's first TP scheme, and with it, we can now shape the city's development in a well-designed, structured manner," Chaudhary reiterated.
Vapi holds significance as a key industrial hub situated strategically between Surat and Mumbai, known for its thriving chemical and manufacturing sectors. Its favorable location continues to attract considerable investment from both Gujarat and Maharashtra.
